About
The story behind Desktop Duck.
Desktop Duck started as a side project — a way to make the hours at a computer feel a little less lonely. The idea was simple: what if there was just a small, friendly creature living on your screen? No features, no subscriptions, no account required. Just a little duck doing duck things.
It grew from there. What started as a weekend experiment with pixel art and a few lines of code turned into something people actually wanted to keep running all day. Today Desktop Duck has 100K+ downloads across Windows and Mac, eight hats, eight colour options, and users who have apparently named their ducks things like Gerald, Sir Reginald Feathersworth, and — according to one report — simply "Bread."
A free, lightweight desktop companion app. It sits on your screen, wanders around, falls asleep when you're away, reacts to music from Spotify or YouTube Music, and generally makes long screen sessions feel more bearable.
It's built for people who spend too much time staring at a monitor and want something small and alive in the corner. Not a productivity tool. Not an AI assistant. Just a duck. A very good duck.
Desktop Duck runs on Windows 10 or later and macOS 12 Monterey or later. The installer is about 4MB. It uses minimal CPU and memory, lives in your system tray, and gets out of your way when you need it to.
Desktop Duck is a solo indie project. One developer, no team, no company, no investors. It's free forever because it was never meant to be a product — it was meant to be a gift. Something to share with people who, like the developer, spend too many hours alone with a computer and sometimes just want a small, quiet companion.
The app has no telemetry, no account system, no ads inside the app, and no tracking of any kind. It's built to be trusted.
The best place to reach the developer is GitHub Issues at github.com/TheHiddenALien/desktop-duck. Bug reports, feature requests, questions — all welcome.
If Desktop Duck has brought you joy, made a long workday a little easier, or you've just grown genuinely attached to your duck, a small donation really does help keep it alive and in development.
